Story

Nestled in the Cowaramup Brook valley and the lee of the Leeuwin Ridge, Grace Farm is a small, family-owned vineyard that uses sustainable farming principles to produce premium hand-crafted wines.

John Mair met Elizabeth Lefroy in 1969 and they married in 1971, raising five children in Perth. The family spent many holidays in the South West and, in 2003, purchased the property that would become Grace Farm.

Grace Farm is situated in the Wilyabrup subregion of Margaret River, bounded by Caves Road, Cowaramup Bay Road, the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park and private bushland. It lies 12 kilometres from Margaret River township and less than two kilometres from the Indian Ocean and the worldclass surf breaks at Gracetown. Cowaramup Brook runs through the property, supporting a mix of jarrah, marri, karri, peppermint and melaleuca woodlands. Half of the land is pristine bush, home to rare orchids and marsupials, while the other half, once used for cattle, has been developed as a vineyard alongside fruit trees and vegetables.

The Caladenia excelsa orchid, a rare and endemic local species, was chosen as the emblem for Grace Farm’s latest label. It symbolises the family’s aim to protect the natural environment while producing wine from the land. In the same spirit, the Excelsa Wine Club was launched to connect directly with people who wish to experience the wines and all the Farm has to offer, and has grown steadily since its beginning.

Hospitality has also played an important role in the story of Grace Farm. Since 2015, the family has hosted an annual long table lunch with chef Paul Salmeri, bringing people together to share the best Grace Farm wines with a rustic Italian feast. Various wine tasting events are held throughout the year, at either the cellar door or the family home in Perth.

In December 2020, Grace Farm opened its cellar door at the entrance to the property on Cowaramup Bay Road. The prefabricated structure was chosen to minimise site works and waste, and finished with marri timber milled on the property. Power is supplied via an off-grid solar system. From the deck, visitors can look out across the surrounding forest while tasting the wines and, from time to time, seasonal produce grown on the farm.

Today, Grace Farm remains a small, family-owned vineyard guided by sustainable farming principles. Three generations of the family work on the property from time to time, pruning and picking in the vineyard and tending the orchard and vegetable garden. The wines reflect both the Wilyabrup landscape and the family’s ongoing commitment to caring for land and people.
